  1. Well, I guess you can throw out my initial build here. Not only have they changed up several of my Ranger skills, but they have also added another skill. I haven't had a chance yet to review the Marksman skills, but I'm sure there are changes there as well.

The new Ranger skill I have is Rain of Arrows. This one really agros the enemies! It does an AOE of literally arrows raining out of the sky above them doing a base of 550 dmg over 6 seconds with a cooldown of 8 seconds. This means I can keep it going almost constantly. I also have it up to Rank 2 which is doing about 625 dmg over the 6 seconds. It draws agro big time, but if you can do an AOE root then pour that down on them in a group it's awesome to see all the 100's rolling off of everything in that area.

I'm still trying to decide if this skill might have been a little OP with it only being a level 20 soul tier. But boy is it sweet to come across some loner out in the wilderness that's getting overwhelmed and fire that skill off around them. I get a lot of thank you's. Oh, and it's perfect for when an invasion engages an NPC group. The invasion enemies usually group together automatically and I just fire away - and run as they charge me...lol. NPCs usually draw agro back pretty quick (I'm only running about 20m) and then I can fire another round.

  2. I'll be playing on Shadefallen for more PvE and using it to learn more about crafting, higher level skills, and dungeon instances.

I also have a very low level toon on the Deepstrike PvP server. I was going to use this server to test out open-world PvP, BUT if someone else has a high(er) level toon on a different PvP server, just let me know and I can switch.

  3. My son & I got our beta invite tonight. Looks like we will be able to still play our other toons. With that one I will continue to improve upon, maybe even do some crafting and more PvP instances.

I'm also going to make a toon on an actual PvP shard (server) so I can check that out more. Anyone else already have a PvP shard they are playing on? Pass it on so we can hook up.

  4. Got my invite! See you all tomorrow?

Congrats! I've must have really made them upset when I found the backdoor from the Guardian area into the Defiant area. I thought we were suppose to do some serious beta testing and try different things out... A GM one-shot'ed me when I started killing the Defiant NPCs. LOL

    (I'm sure I'll get my invite soon... I have a VIP beta key & a pre-order key)

  5. Hey guys,

Well my grandmother beat the cancer, but passed away during the healing process. The trauma to her lungs was a bit more than her 78 year old body could heal from.

Im in pretty bad shape. Losing her was essentially like losing a father.

Ill be leaving to Louisiana on monday and will be there for about 2 weeks. Ill post in forums when I can.

Very, VERY sorry to hear about your loss.

  6. I sent in a question the other day and part of their automated answer (which had nothing to do with my question) has details about the upcoming beta:

"Some extra information about our beta event 6 and invitations can also be found below:

    • If you have entered a VIP key you will be sent an invite to all beta events. Most of the invites will be sent out starting Wednesday night and throughout Thursday. And we will be sending out invites during the duration of the beta event if you apply your VIP key during the beta event.

    • The beta event begins on Friday at 10 am PST and will go until Monday at 10 am PST! You will be able to patch before the beta start but you will not see or be able to connect to any servers until 10am on Friday 2/4/2011."

    Get ready to rumble!

  7. Here is the buff stat/preorder info.

-- Swirling Sourcestone Rune (GameStop): Air touches your weapon, wreathing it in lightning (+10 Air Resist)

From what I see on Alpha these stones only give you defensive buffs with with +3 to endurance. They are reusable for the life of the account however and can only be used on melee weapons.

Only usable on melee weps? DARN IT! I thought my bow would look so cool with lightning swirling up and down it. Maybe even a little residue lightning swirling off of an arrow as it flew from my bow before it dissipated from the arrow. You're crushing my dreams Astrus! LOL Where's my Capt Morgan and Coke...

  8. Here is some info for you:

You can set up to 4 different load-outs of characters with up to 3 souls each that you can switch on the fly (once you have unlocked them). So if you're playing your PvE toon version and are getting ready to get into a PvP situation, you can just pull up the Soul Tree menu and change your load-out. You will be locked into whatever "main" class you pick (warrior, cleric, mage or rogue), but there are about 8+ sub-classes (or souls) under each main class so you have some really cool combinations you can come up with that fits your style of play. And if you do create 4 different load-outs and you're not happy, don't worry. Just go to a "trainer" and you can reset whichever load-out you want and change out the souls into a new combination for that load-out.

The guilds also have perks that members can unlock and use in addition to the massive amount of personal ones you get to choose from.

Finally, the world is seamless (no load screens) except for the dungeon instances.

I have played a lot of Lineage II, my son has played a lot of Lineage II and Aion, and we both have checked out WoW. For a fantasy MMO, to us, RIFT ROCKS!

I can totally understand being a skeptic though. Just take a look at the other posts and use one of the beta keys we have listed (can be used by more than one person) and try the game yourself. The next beta starts this friday at 10am PST.

  9. I will not be leaving STO either. I will be cutting back on my time in STO and only playing when new content is released or when I get the urge. I will purchase the lifetime membership for STO the end of this week. Otherwise I'm going to spend the other part of my time in Rift.

I hope to be seeing you in both games...

  10. In beta 5 I was only able to get to level 25. I was actually reading the quests, researching online what different things did, and explored the world - A LOT! Since this build has you maxed out, I can only spectualate the additional DPS from the skills. That's why I said "..._should_ be able to dish out some serious DPS..." But here is what I plan on using (the 4 initial attacks are what I was able to use in beta 5 and it worked great):

Passive Skills active: Eagle Eye (Crits +5%), Killing Focus (dmg +4%), Prey on the Weak (pet crit = dmg +30% for pet & me), Doubleshot (25% free additional shot), Sharpshoot (+3% to hit), Increased Fire Power (crits = +25% attack pwr), Penetrating Shots (Ranged Physical dmg ignore 20% of target's armor), Master Archer (25% of added Air dmg), Virulent Poison (20% of additional water dmg), Master Huntsman (+10% pet dmg), & Feral Insticts (pet's crit +3%)

Active Skills: Predatory Instincts (+5 attack pwr), Marksman's Pedestal (+10% dmg)

1st attack - Phantom Blow (Named Shadow fire on this Soul Planner). Deals nice dmg along with 2 combo pts AND increases attack spd by 20%.

    [pet (blood raptor) engages target]

2nd attack - Splinter Shot. Causes target to bleed and another 2 combo pts.

[causes pet to enter blood rage for extra 15% dmg]

3rd attack - Quick shot (w/ improved quick shot) keeps target bleeding (go get'em pet!) and awards the 5th combo pt. [i've seen Doubleshot kick in a good portion of the time for an extra free attack]

4th attack - finisher with Head Shot [which kicks in Bestial Fury for the next 60 secs increasing dmg by me & pet by another 10%]. I had this attack doing between 250-325 dmg when it would hit at my lvl 25.

I can tell you this - I was laying down 5 combo pts on the target before they really knew what hit them...

For fighing an armor heavy or pvp I would probably add Piercing Shot between the 1st & 2nd attack to reduce their armor value. If they started to charge me I usually hit them with Crippling Shot to slow them down and Divert Rage to get the pet to agro back. If not I would hit them with Repelling shot and start moving backwards at same time. Then I would try to root them to gain me somemore distance.

Also for pvp, I would hit Bull's Eye before I did the finisher and then after the finisher I would hit Quick Reload to do another round of the same thing. After two fast rounds of attacks with all that dmg should be letting you know I'm here to play rough.

There are so many different types of attacks that I didn't even get to unlock, that I would have to really play this to figure out the best "cycle" of attacks to use. I wish I was in Alpha testing...

  11. In Beta 5 I played a Ranger/Marksman/Riftstalker. It was good combo that had a pet to keep agro most of the time, a very nice selection range attacks, and riftstalker abilities to increase my armor, warp 15m when I needed to escape faster, and a melee attack that took a chunk out of the enemy and bumped my armor up by 246 if I got into that situation. I think it worked well. Then I got to messing around with skills and trying to come up with the deadliest DPS Rogue possible. Here is what I came up with:

    Fast Killing Rogue

    1. Notice that I selected all skills related to ranged attacks in general so that those skills would apply to both the Ranger's & Marksman's skills - not limited to a specific sub-class skill.

    2. I was able to get the best possible pet for the ranger and selected all the skills to make it do maximum damage. I need the pet to keep agro at all costs since I didn't pick any bonus health skills. You are what you are in that respect. You do have a ranged attack that works in melee mode and a repel shot to help if enemies get too close.

    3. I mainly concentrated on single target skills as AOE attacks would draw attention to you as the pet can only attack 1 creature at a time.

    4. I only took the assassin as the 3rd class to gain the additional chance of poison affecting the target (other classes didn't offer any bonus damage skills unless you put points into them). So no skill points were spent in that class. I can not find anywhere on whether the assassin's poison root skill affects melee weps only or all attack types. So for now, I'm assuming all types.

    5. Finally, read over the skills and notice the large amount of bonus damage, bonus crits, ignoring of armor, AND increase attack speed I was able to get. This build should be able to dish out some serious DPS as long as you can keep out of melee.

  12. Last night I started a cleric on a PvP server. I didn't get high enough to actually PvP, but for the PvE it was a dream. The cleric is SO versatile (moderate tank, ranged spell attacks, and healing out the whazoo). For the next beta I'm going on a PvP server and test out the cleric.

I could just imagine all of us on a PvP server as clerics covering those 3 roles in some form or another. We should, if played correctly, roll anyone out there as a group. With all of us having some form of healing we could take turns healing and just clean house!

Don't get me wrong though. Having a true tank and DPS dealer with us would be icing on the cake...

  13. So I had a great time playing on the PvE server and learning about the game mechanics. I just got back from pre-ordering the Uber Collector's Edition of RIFT at GameStop.

I have been doing some research (RIFT forums) and talking to a guy a GameStop that's been doing the Beta testing as well and it seems (possibly) that the PvP servers won't let you PvP until your level 25. There may also be zones that you can't PvP in. And finally, there may be a level range, around your level, that you can only PvP against - So a level 50 guy can't PvP a level 25 guy.

Here is a video about the different PvP styles you can do:

Here is a video I found that talks about how Trion is trying to take the "scare" out of PvP servers for people. It starts at about 2min 30sec into the video:

So I have changed my vote from "PvE" to "I don't care". I didn't go straight to "PvP" because that is what I'm wanting to test out in the next Beta. Which is the type of server I believe we should play on next so we all can make an informed decision on which type of server to play on when RIFT goes live.

  14. I haven't had a chance to play yet...so please pardon if this sounds ignorant...Are the dungeons and raids Instance's or Open Zone? If they are instances, it would seem to me that no other group/raid group would be able to enter the same instance. Now, if the raid is taking place in an open zone, then yeah.

I entered one dungeon and I believe they are an Instance. It had to do a load screen for it and there was a rift-looking portal you had to use to enter/exit it.
